NOTE: This review is for a book with mature content and sexy times!
Hard as It Gets by Laura Kaye is the first book in the Hard Ink series. It follows Becca Merritt and Nick Rixey as they work together to find Becca’s missing brother. Over the course of investigating, Nick brings together the surviving members of his old special forces unit with hopes of rescuing Charlie. Not to mention the fact that the mayhem they’ve walked into could be the key to restoring his unit’s buried, but well-earned, honor.
Based on the cover and official synopsis of this book, I was expecting a contemporary romance novel with a lot of steamy scenes and tattoos, with a bit of a mystery thrown in. What I actually got was a pleasant surprise! There were plenty of steamy scenes, and steamy tattoos, but they were surrounded by an exciting and thoroughly developed, suspenseful plot.
This really is a perfect beach book: genuinely likable characters, sexy times, and a nail-biting suspense.
The other pleasant surprise was the fact that the story arc appears to run through the entire series, not just ending with this book. Kaye introduces us to this GREAT cast of characters banding together from all over to help Becca and Nick, each one with lead potential, and we get to stick with them for several more novels and novellas while we all get to the bottom of what is really going on.
Now, more about those tattoos:
Running almost the whole length of his spine, a dragon wrapped itself around a deadly black sword, hilt just below his neck, point at his lower back, ending near a mass of scars that traveled outward toward his hip and disappeared below the waistband of his jeans. The dragon’s wings spanned his shoulder blades, and the movement of his muscles made is appear alive, actually struggling to hold its perch on the steel. The red of the beast’s eyes looked out from the image, holding her gaze.
And quite possibly my favorite scene:
When he returned, he had a fistful of pens.
“What are they for?”
He crawled in bed next to her, then met her gaze. “I want to draw on you. Bad.”
I had a great time reading this book, and I’m looking forward to starting the next one, Hard as You Can. Especially since the saga continues from Shane’s perspective.
“Be careful, you guys. And good luck.”
Without looking back, Shane raised a hand and waved. “Ain’t no thing but a chicken wing.”
