My rating: 4 of 5 stars

NOTE:  This review is for a book with mature content and sexy times!

First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones is a fast, fun read about Charley Davidson and her crazy life as a private investigator – and as the one and only grim reaper. It is about 40% witty quips and wisecracks, 35% private eye plot, and 25% series plot. All of these things combine to make an excellent vacation read that is part paranormal PI novel, part chick lit, and part comedy sitcom.

This is one of those books you pick up at an airport newsstand and then laugh your way through on the plane. Thank goodness for books like this. Charley is SUPER spunky and sarcastic, and half of the things that come out of her mouth reinforce this.

“I gotta tell you Davidson, I’m impressed,” he said, his eyes glued to the screen. “That took balls.”

“Please,” I said with a snort, “that took ovaries. Of which I have two.”

Reyes, the super hot son of satan, is a caricature of the quintessential bad boy. Learning more about his character was one of the more intriguing aspects of the story.

He was fierce, his expression wary and furious at once, as if he’d been warning the officers to keep their distance. For their own protection. Even in the poor lighting his eyes sparkled with what seemed like barely controlled rage. He had not been a happy camper when they’d taken his picture.

This isn’t exactly a “high-brow” read, but as many others have said, not every book needs to be. I’m looking forward to reading through the rest of the series (my vacation already enabled me to get through Second Grave on the Left and Third Grave Dead Ahead), but this isn’t one I want to plow through too quickly. A little Charley wit goes a long way 😉
